Hello everyone. I hope all is well and you have a blessed Christmas Break while we join together on this quick adventure

Here is my blog page address:

http://wnnoble.blogspot.com/

Tech Class

Well this is officially my second blog, because I messed and created my blog page first.   I will learn from my mistakes.  This is easier than I expected.

Technology Class

Hello: I have just created my blog account.

Time Zone for Blog

I am still trying to change my time zone. According to help, you are supposed to go to settings and choose format. Then you simply change your time zone. Okay, easy enough. However, when I go to my settings, it only allows me to choose e-mail and mobile information. It doesn't have the formatting option.

If you figure this out, please post how for me.

Technology For Educators

This class has helped me in using some of the early technology that I first learned in my technology classes during my undergraduate studies. Also during this class I have used a lot more technology during teaching and I am going to continue to do so. The khan acadmey was really helpful this morning during my fifth grade matn class and I look forward to using it more often.

3rd Grade Classroom Blog

I wasn't sure if this is where I was supposed to post my classroom blog or not but here it is. www.vpattersons3rdgrade.com I created this blog at the begining of this school year in hopes of staying in contact with parents and sharing with them what is going on in the classroom. I have received great feedback from both students and parents. It has been helpful to me because student with internet acces at home can access their math program and receive tutoring, access to the class calendar, spelling list, etc. Let me know what you think!

Great Resource/Assignment

I would like you to log onto www.khanacademy.org and follow these directions. This is an assignment that will be related to the class Web Blog that you are creating for your class.

You don't have any students yet.

Each of your students needs to sign in and follow these steps:

  1. First, they should click on the Add a Coach link at the bottom of the page.
  2. Then, they should enter your Coach ID in the form that looks like this:
    jrubin@unionky.edu
    Your Coach ID is jrubin@unionky.edu.
  3. Finally, they need to click the Register Coach button. It looks like this:
    jrubin@unionky.edu
Once students make you their coach, you'll have access to all types of interesting data about their progress and achievements.
You can access that data via the Class Report.

I am passing this on to other early elementary teachers at my school. I usually have several people ask me questions about some of the sites that I use - this has been a great way to pass on that information in one fail swoop rather than answering several different emails.

EDUC 573

I am finding EDUC 573 a very valuable class. I started out extremely fearful because I do not have a strong technology background. I am finding the reading to be really basic but that is exactly what I need. I'm sure that some of you are a little bored if this is something that you grew up with or use on a daily basis. I am taking baby steps into the 21st century but maybe I can learn some new trick to use in the classroom.

Technology for Educators: Inquiry-Based Learning: How does it differ from th...: The inquiry-based approach is my preferred method of instruction in the classroom. Kids seem to get more from a lesson if they "do the work...

I agree that inquiry based learning is very valuable. I also incorporate performance based assessment as a portion of unit tests to "grow those dendrites" students need for long term storage of content.

Podcasts

I am still unable to "post a comment" in the comment section, so I am responding to Lori Rollin's post--
Won't it be fantastic when funding for education reaches the level that allows us to teach via podcast then know that the students have access to the technology necessary?  Imagine the level of mastery a student could reach if the majority of our instruction time was spent one on one instead of introducing new material.
It amazes me some days in the classroom with the depth of knowledge that students have in technology. They are able to explore and learn new ways to solve problems especially in my math class.  I am able to teach them how to use the calculator to solve problems to make problem solving quicker and more efficient.  They teach me new things also with their computer knowledge and finding shortcuts to make work easier.

Teaching via podcasts

I read an amazing website about two educators Jonathon Bergmann and Aaron Sams who are teaching via podcasts to their classrooms. They are recording the lessons, sending the children home at night to watch and learn the lesson. Then they are coming into the classroom and doing their homework or labs while the teacher is there to help them. The students have a tab on the page saying that it really works for them. They must have 85% mastery of the lesson before they can move on. If they do not reach that, then they must start over on the lesson. The parents also have a tab and were noted as skeptical at first, but really loving it now. Seems like it is really a technology oriented idea, but would be a ton of extra work probably. It would be nice to have the students doing their homework in class so they could ask questions. But what about those without internet coverage? That would be a challenge. Innovative idea I have to say, would be nice for a maternity leave, or extended absence to. Especially in this day and age with the evaluations and the way we are held accountable for students scores, this might be a golden ticket! Something to check out and think about! go to www.mast.unco.edu/programs/vodcasting/index.php or search for those two teachers names. It will come up!

Supporting the teaching of reading

I am a first grade teacher and I feel like I spend my entire day teaching reading! In my district, primary students 1.5 hours in a 'core' reading class (using SFA materials), then an additional hour in a supplemental reading class (using SRA materials). We used to use the DRA to determine reading level, but now we soley rely on a students MAP scores to determine their reading level. Here is my problem with this: before my students took the MAP test this fall I spent the days before explaining the test to them, encouraging them to do their best, and showed them a tutorial online of what the test would look like, how to listen to the question again, and clicking on only one answer. But I find that my students do not give their full attention to the test and it is reflected in low test scores. These scores are used to determine the level reading class they will be placed in, and it is ususally a class that is too low for their reading ability, and they become bored.

Samantha

I agree with others, I don't know how I could do everything without my smart board. My bulb blew this week and I had to go 2 days without it and my lessons didn't feel as though they were as meaningful as having those wonderful visuals. I went back and had a review day so I could show my students more things about what we had learned this week!

Inquiry Based learning article

Regina Davenport: Wow!! What an interesting article. I am old school but i am also a CTE teacher and a lot of my classroom activities is focused on inquiry based learning. We explore various diseases and i really think students need to understand the why? and How? I still think they need basic knowledge to be able to understand when something is wrong with a patient and then use their skills to rule out various issues. I think the ideal classroom would use a balance approach between traditional based learning and inquiry based learning. It has given me an idea of how to incorporate more of inquiry based learning by given patients symptoms and having students come up with a diagnosis and an explanation of how they narrowed down their diagnosis and use my classroom like an episode of "House".

Inquiry-Based Learning

I think inquiry-based learning is a good way to involve students in the learning process. I teach history, and most students want to know why things happened. There are times when they ask questions that I am not really sure what the answer is. To kind of spark their interest, I offer bonus points to those who find the answer for me. I teach eighth grade, and they are really hard to get interested in anything. By this age, group work doesn't seem to work that great, at least in social studies. In some groups, one or two do the work and the others just get the answers from them. I would like to find ways to do more inquiry-based learning with my students.

Inquiry-Based Learning: How does it differ from the traditional approach?

The inquiry-based approach is my preferred method of instruction in the classroom. Kids seem to get more from a lesson if they "do the work" and gather the information while I facilitate and engage them in how and why questions, as opposed to me "talking at them" and handing out worksheets. I set up task rotations that allow the students to use problem solving skills and perform hands on tasks. The inquiry-based method is the best approach for my classroom, and this article supports the method as well, over the traditional classroom. Of course, every so many years a new method will be introduced and administrators will require that method in the classroom.

Poverty in schools article

I would like to comment on this article. I find it really sad that teachers feel they have to change score sheets to survive. I have a problem with standardized tests. My daughter for example was a 4.o student in high school and she could not get money for college because the best score she could get on ACT was a 23. She felt as if she had failed and that she could not be successful in college. Now she is going into her junior year as a nursing major with a 4.0 GPA. I say all of this because we as educators and students are so consumed with test scores that we can't teach our students life skills. I have seniors in high school that can't even address an envelope. When teachers are under so much pressure that they must change answers on tests we are in trouble.

Twitter for Teachers: Discovering Hashtags

I am not a big Twitter person and frankly don't see what all the hype is about. Therefore I clicked on this page hoping that someone would enlighten me to the wonderful world of Twitter. I have to say, the author Patti Grayson made some excellent points. She talked about how we can use the site to meet up with people who are teaching our same subjects, and the same grade for chats on Twitter to share ideas. Now there is a useful tool! It also touched on what the hashtags are. #confused....that was me! I see these all the time on facebook and other places but have never experienced anything with them. Man you can even do a hashtag search! Now I don't know that I would go that far, but the chat rooms with people around the country that teach my grade and my subject...I'm in for! #I'monthat! HA HA

I am trying to post to someone else post but it says I do not have access to do this. I understand how to post new post but not to comment on others post. Could someone help. Thanks

Collaboration

Collaboration is a great resource I really can't see myself doing anything but collaboration. After watching a video I can see many new ideas and found they have the same attitude toward collaboration. Many teachers today see the collaboartion group and say I hate that group of kids. At my school they enjoy having htem in class and I can't say enough about my job. My principal completed a walk through with a different school and the group asked which teacher was the math teacher and which was special education teacher. They had us backwards with my math teacher being a female they thought we collaborated well together. The common goal is to teach kids and there is no such thing as your kids and my kids.

technology

This is my first blog. it is mind boggling for me just joining in. I am still waiting on my textbook but your comments have me very curious about all the new ways to bring information back to my students. I am learning myself and now maybe my students won't have to show me how to use my equipment now.

Whiel teaching I find so many different ways to implement technology into my lessons.  I would not know what to do without my smartboard, airliner, and elmo.  These tools help me to be so much more effective and time management conscious.  These tools and many other help the students interact in the lesson and connect more to content being introduced.
Chasity
I just finished reading Ch. 2, Connectivism article, and watching the Networked Student. This year in meetings I've heard repeatedly "21st Century Learner/Student", without much definition of what that is. Now I know what a "21st Century Learner/Student" is and some of the technologies to use, as well as the purpose behind developing instruction around technology. Wow! My only question is, who is going to spring for the technology needed for students to learn this way in the classroom? I've heard they have it at home, few of my students actually have access to the web at home. So how do we put this into practice?
I found the Connectivism article to be very interesting. I did not know what a node was, so I looked it up. Finding meaning out of chaos through central/connecting points to organize information for the purpose of attaining new knowledge makes sense. I agree that the old theories support learning through technology, but do not completely address the new methods of learning through technology.

Welcome

This is the first blog on the WebBlog - Technology for Educators
We will be exploring different forms of technology and how they can be effectively applied to the classroom. The focus will be on how technology can add to student interest and ultimately to what they learn.
This will be a collaboration between all of us to weed through the many possiblities and find a few resources that we can actually apply to our lives and classrooms with little expense and just a little effort.
