Melanie Bates

I thought the first blog didn't get posted.  Sorry to post pretty much the same thing twice.

Melanie Bates

Hello, my name is Melanie Bates.  I teach Wellness at Jellico High School in Jellico, Tennessee.  I have taught Wellness that past two years and before that, I spent 10 years at Jellico Elementary teaching Physical Education.  It has been quite a difficult transition going from 50 minute classes of Physical Education to hour and a half classes of teaching Wellness at the high school level.  I have been so overwhelmed just getting lessons and activities prepared for class that I have neglected implementing technology.  I am excited to have been introduced to screencasting, podcasting, and blogging.  These are tools that I actually think I can do and will be a great addition to my lessons.  Up until now I have only made poor attempts at Powerpoint presentations.  I hope to work all the bugs out before the new school year and be able to utilize the tools that we have learned in this class.   I am "old school" and not very techno-savvy.  This is my very first blog....ever!
I'm excited! This is my first time ever blogging.  I am not so techno-savvy,  as someone else described it "technotarded," so needless to say, this class and all the assignments we have done have been quite a challenge for me.   I have taught Wellness at Jellico High School for the past two years.  Before that, I taught Jr. High Physical Education.  It has been quite a transition to go from the gym all day to preparing lessons that stretch out over an hour and a half, the block schedule.  I haven't implemented much technology into my lessons thus far.  Powerpoint, in it's simplest form is about all I have done.  I am anxious to get all the bugs worked out of blogging and podcasting so I can introduce it into my planning this year.

Jing is great!

Jing is a very powerful and useful tool for the classroom.  I am going to start using it as a change up delivery method for content to my classes.  When I'm not able to be in my classroom with my kids I can have important lessons captured with Jing and they will be able to get a classroom experience close to the same as having me in the class with them.  It's great!

Different World

How much education has changed since I was in 8th grade is astronomical. When I look at the standards, technology, and classroom management their has been an unreal amount of things to take place. The way that material was being introduced has completely changed. With internet access students have so many outlets to learn and to advance. I couldn't tell you were education will be in 10 years but as educators we have to be able to adapt to changing tide of technology.

Aging

I can remember when computers was being introduced to schools and I was young and thought this is awesome. Now with all the new technologies coming out I am seeing myself becoming that older person scratching their heads thinking all of this is foreign. However, I am really seeing how our new technologies can help our students in the classroom.

Blogs!

I love the fact that I can share with my students, or in my case, the parents! I can see how this would be a great way to stay in touch with everyone. I know that our school is very strict on letting visitors into our school (which is a good thing) and this could always be a way for them to see what is happening! Through this course, the blog has to be my favorite thing we have done. When teaching kindergarten, it is hard to use the other things we have learned from the course.

I do believe ALL teachers can appreciate this video

Blogging!

After completing the assignment to create our own web blog, I can definitely see the impact this could have in a classroom.  Students would have the opportunity to interact with the teacher beyond the classroom.  This would also allow the teacher to offer a vast amount of information to students through other sites, pictures and videos.  I really think students would enjoy classroom blogs.  Parents could also benefit from blogging.  Parents could help their kids study if they have the information in front of them.  The blog could also serve as a means to post upcoming events, keeping both parents and students up to date.

Screencast

I just finished the screencast assignment and I can see some great uses for this especially for students who have been absent in Math Class lol.....It isn't as bad as I thought it would be and I do see the relevance my classroom and school....

Overwhelmed!!!

Although I am thankful to be learning new things and remembering things I had forgotten, I am so overwhelmed. I do have to admit, the things I am learning and applying in this class are a lot more fun and beneficial than writing papers!!!

So Excited!

I know that we have only been in this class for a couple of weeks, but I can't believe how much that I have already learned!  I have learned to blog, do a podcast and do a screencast.  Not only can I blog, I can add gadgets to my blogs.  I am so excited!  I am learning things that I can actually use in my classroom.  I can't wait to see what else I can learn.

Hello, Finally! I think!

I really hope I am doing this right. It has taken me forever to figure it out. Anyways, my name is Michael Davidson and I am currently a middle school social studies teacher at Chavies Elementary. I look forward to leaning some new technology ideas to use in my own class.

This is my first attempt at blogging.  As a matter of fact I am not technology savvy.  I have a hard time even looking at my email.  Thankfully my husband knows a lot about it.  I get him to help me all the time.  I hope that this class I'm in helps me to build a little knowledge base on the use of technology in the classroom.  Though, I have been using some websites in my teaching this year.  So I guess that is a step in the right direction.

Hope I'm doing this correctly!

OK... I am pleased to hear that everyone is excited about this class; I, however, am more fearful than excited.  It just took me 30 minutes to figure out how to start typing in the little blog box.  The good news is this is our first assignment and I have already had to read to chapter three in our book to figure out how to post a blog.  Shouldn't that have been in chapter one? I guess that means I'm getting a jump start on class readings!  Ahh... silver linings!  My name is Linda Farley and I teach mathematics at Belfry High School in Pike County Kentucky.  I love what I do and am a math nerd, but I am also a "technotard".  This class is going to be challenging for me, but as I learned during a recent professional development day, "One can accomplish anything with a growth mindset."  I graduated high school back when hair was big, restaurant meals were small  and they taught typing instead of computer skills.  What does all of this mean?  For all of you young men and women, it means I am old enough to your mother.  I have been married for almost 30 years and have three children.  I would like to implement a "flipped" classroom next year.  I hope to learn the skills required to make the transition to a "flipped" classroom.  Actually, pretty much anything we learn (technology wise), will be helpful to me.  Dr. Rubin has his work cut out for him.  Wish me luck!

1st post!

Greetings! My name is Jodie Carnes, and I am a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher at Lynn Camp High School in Knox County, Kentucky. I am really excited about this class and learning to integrate new technology into my classroom. Sometimes it is crazy how advanced my students are in regards to technology and it is hard to keep up. One of the cool things that I love about my job is how my students can take the technology skills that they learn from design software that we have for our class' monogram machine and use in the work force. Although it sounds simple, when you get into the design aspects, it gets pretty intense.

Hello

Hello EDUC 573

Hello, my name is Christie Bryant and I teach 5th grade at Jesse D. Lay Elementary School. I have been teaching for 5 years going into my sixth year and try to use technology as much as I can in my classroom. I love learning new forms of technology that I can use in my classroom, students seem to respond better and soak up more knowledge than the old pen and pencil methods...lol. I have one little girl that will be seven in August and she thinks she should be 18 with her smarty pants personality but she is my pride and joy. She loves playing on the computer, smart board, apps on her IPad and they are educational and at times she doesn't realize how much it's benefitting her. I am really excited about taking this class and learning more about technology that I can use in my classroom.
