Technology in the Educational World

As an educator, I believe that the use of technology helps connect students in the learning process.  Looking back at my earlier experiences in the classroom, I was a fourth grade teacher and I only had one computer in my classroom.  That was the only piece of technology that existed in that room. Wow, how things have drastically changed since then!! Now, I teach first-graders using a document camara (the best invention ever), projector, five computers, and one laptop.
I have to be honest.  Sometimes technology can be scary.  I know that I must embrace it so I can teach my students how to connect to the world in which we live.  I totally agree with our reading in our textbook about students being ahead of teachers in the technological world.  I have always had that feeling.  I am sure that this class will empower me to have a different outlook on technology and its many uses.

  1. I agree that students are ahead of most teachers in technology. However, I feel district mandates must be changed before we can embrace personal technology devices for learning. I'm not going to go out on a limb and get lambasted for going against policy.

  2. When I first began teaching there were computers in the classroom. Teachers had the disadvantage of having little training in computers or other technology. Now my classroom is different yet I still have little student computer access inside my classroom. Not many of my students have computers at home either, except for their parents' iphones. I know when I get stuck on technology, I ask my three children for help. They always know the answers to my questions or know someone else who will help. When you work in a Title I school, funds for getting technology equipment are sometimes hard to receive. Hopefully things will improve in the next few years.

  3. Michelle, My how things have really changed over the last decade or two! We are witness to a new era of technology where we have watched this newfound technology be implemented and evolve in our classrooms and society as a whole. I can remember when computers were first introduced into the school setting - I was a senior in high school when we received our first set of computers and they set up a computer lab for us to take a computer class. The teacher did not understand them at this particular time and neither did we. I can remember us just playing games on them not knowing how to do anything else, and the teacher was unable to teach us anything at that time b/c it was new to her also. It is amazing what you can do with all this new technology. I'm sure you (and myself also) have learned a great deal with this class. I am thankful for having had this class, as I have found new resources to help educate our children and future leaders.
